Pedro Salgado
Scientific Illustration
Pedro Salgado graduated in Marine Biology from the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon (1984) and in Scientific Illustration from the University of California, Santa Cruz, as a Fulbright scholar (1988–1990).
He taught at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon for 20 years. He coordinated the Master’s Program in Scientific Illustration at the Higher Institute of Education and Science (2009–2014).
He has taught Scientific Illustration in five master’s programs and in more than a hundred workshops across the country and abroad since 1989. He played a key role in training a new generation of scientific illustrators in Portugal.
Internationally awarded, his distinctions include the 1st Prize at the GNSI (Guild of Natural Science Illustrators) Conference (1990) and the 1st Prize at the World Congress of Biomedical Communications (1994). He was Chairman of the GNSI Conference (2000), where he also won 1st Prize in both the Black & White and Color categories. He received 1st Prize at the International Illustraciencia Competition, in Barcelona (2017).
As a freelancer, he has illustrated numerous scientific and popular publications over the past 30 years. He is the author of around a hundred postage stamps (Philately, CTT) and has participated in about 70 exhibitions, 16 of which were solo shows.
