Joana Saragaço, Lisbon, 1992. Long before earning her degree in Painting from the Faculty of Fine Arts in Lisbon, Joana was already (and still is) an apprentice embroiderer — learning her craft in her grandmother’s seaside kitchen in Sesimbra. These days, she’s mostly focused on creating textiles, driven by a desire to blur the lines that still separate art and craft, design and folk art, vintage and kitsch — always questioning and playing with the meaning of each in her work.
