Portuguese architect and artist whose drawing practice explores the relationship between nature, construction and time. Through repetitive mark-making, he investigates the transformation of landscapes and the traces left by human intervention.

MEMORY

Nature is a given: it is the first home. The home before the home, the house before the house. The canopies were once roofs, and the stones were walls, perhaps difficult to find.

But without shameless signs at the door, because the tree is a luxury and the stone is the finest of stones, when rain falls through the branches and the walls are made of mud.

Trees and houses are unique, if they are alive.

TIME

We look at life from the outside, through the lens with which we show it to the world. No time, full speed ahead, with the disease of productivity that has made homes sterile and stolen life from people and cities. Between goals rather than dreams, with spreadsheets instead of sheets of paper.

Even though it is difficult to face a blank sheet of paper knowing that time and dreams are ours.

DISTANCE

Distance conceals the truth, which reveals itself as we draw closer: the landscape has changed.

Nature seems to have been reduced to the predictability of gardens. Where there were trees, there are now empty spaces or soulless houses. Pipes and air-conditioning systems. Extensions and garages built without taste and without planning permission. The urge to be seen.

But there are houses built among the trees, indistinguishable from the foliage. Houses that seem to have always been there.

One step back or one step forward.

Nature always claims its space.
